A New Leaf
12,99 € *
zzgl. 1,49 € Versand

One of America’s greatest comic legends, Elaine May, made her debut as writer and director in the wonderful A New Leaf. Unanimously acclaimed from the start, but unavailable for many years, it now stands as a classic alongside Harold and Maude, Bananas and M*A*S*H* as a key film in the new direction of American screen comedy in the 1970s. The great Walter Matthau stars as Henry, a once-rich playboy who has obliviously spent his entire inheritance. Desperate to marry into further financial support, he meets Henrietta (Elaine May), a shy, awkward, though independently wealthy botany professor. What follows is a giddy tale of dubious legal advice, ruthless skullduggery and ferns. A most unorthodox romantic comedy, stuffed with deadpan hilarity and brilliant comic invention, The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present its UK home video premiere in a new Dual-Format edition.

An award winning work from acclaimed documentary filmmaker Kim Longinotto (The Day I Will Never Forget, Divorce Iranian Style) and co-director Florence Ayisi, Sisters in Law is an uplifting and enlightening slice of life, focusing on justice in the Muslim village of Kumba Town, Cameroon. The town is overseen by the progressive female partnership of prosecutor Vera Ngassa and court president Beatrice Ntuba, who together help women to speak out and fight back against assumptions of patriarchal privilege in modern-day Africa. In signature style, Longinotto's unobtrusive camera captures an abundance of colourful characters, allowing their powerful stories to unfold effortlessly, without the need for narration. The cases include Sonita, a young girl who accuses a neighbour of rape; Manka a six-year old who has been beaten with a coat-hanger; and Amina, a wife seeking divorce from her abusive husband. All three are given the sort of support that extends beyond legal advice and becomes a crucial act of empowerment.A warm, witty and involving portrait of two remarkable characters and an example of grassroots action at its most effective, Sisters in Law is that rare thing - a film that makes you believe things might actually get better rather than worse.Special Features:Behind the scenesBehind the scenes.TrailerTrailer.

Problems of the Access to Justice in the UK's L...
12,99 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Essay from the year 2014 in the subject Law - Philosophy, History and Sociology of Law, grade: A, University of Birmingham, language: English, abstract: The continuous reduction of legal aid funding has raised question whether the UK is denying its citizen's access to justice and missing its rule of welfare state. It had been put into practice since the second half of the twentieth century, where the indigenous people, unable to afford the cost of access to justice, were granted legal aid funding with public money. Access to justice is no more prioritised like education, healthcare, and social security to utilise taxpayer's money, while legal advice cost of barristers and solicitors has accelerated at a higher rate. Although equal opportunity and human rights are the two major focal points of English Legal System, austerity caused by economic downturn made it difficult to balance the spending of public money for common necessities of the society and curtailed legal aid. Thus, access to justice is far away from essential needs, and just a luxury for the poor people, which may bring lawlessness in the society.
